Frequently asked questions — Vista Dental Medicine Hat

About Our Practice

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes — Vista Dental is always welcoming new patients from across Medicine Hat and Southern Alberta. No referral needed. Simply call us at (403) 548-7077 or request an appointment online.

Where are you located and is there parking?

We're located at #101, 7 Strachan Bay SE in south Medicine Hat. Free parking is available on site, and the clinic is wheelchair accessible and accessible by public transit.

Do you see children?

Absolutely. Dr. Atwood and Dr. Spitz both love working with young patients and are known for making children feel comfortable and at ease. We welcome children of all ages from their very first tooth.

What if I haven't been to the dentist in years?

You're not alone — and you won't be judged. Dr. Atwood and Dr. Spitz have built Vista Dental around welcoming patients who are nervous, anxious or who haven't seen a dentist in a long time. We'll start by getting to know your situation and go from there at your pace. The most important thing is that you're here.

Do you offer sedation for anxious patients?

Yes. We offer nitrous oxide sedation — commonly known as laughing gas — for patients who feel nervous or anxious about dental procedures. It's safe, fast-acting and wears off quickly so most patients can drive themselves home afterward. Let us know when you book and we'll make arrangements.

Insurance & Payment

Do you direct bill to my dental insurance provider?

Yes — Vista Dental directly bills most major dental insurance providers including Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Alberta Blue Cross, Green Shield Canada, Desjardins, SSQ and Industrial Alliance. We'll submit your claim on your behalf so you only pay your portion on the day of your appointment. Don't see your provider on the list? Just give us a call and we'll confirm your coverage before your appointment.

Do you accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

Yes! Vista Dental is participating in direct billing to the Canadian Dental Care Plan. To find out more about your eligibility, visit the federal benefits page here.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept cash, credit card and debit card. We also offer flexible payment plans through our Financial Coordinator for treatment costs not covered by insurance, on a case-by-case basis. Visit our financial information page or call us to discuss your options.

Do you bill according to the fee guide?

Yes. Vista Dental bills in accordance with the Alberta Dental Fee Guide — the annual schedule of recommended fees set by the Alberta Dental Association. You'll never be charged above the fee guide without prior discussion and your full consent.

Your first Visit

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring your dental insurance information and policy number, a list of any current medications and dosages, and a list of any allergies or medical conditions. If you have dental records from a previous dentist it helps to have those transferred in advance — our team can help facilitate this, just give us a call.

What happens at my first appointment?

Your first visit is all about getting to know you. We'll review your medical and dental history, perform a comprehensive oral exam using digital X-rays and intraoral cameras, and walk you through our findings in plain language before recommending any treatment. Nothing proceeds without your full understanding and consent. Most first visits take about 60–90 minutes.

How often should I come in for checkups?

We recommend a checkup and professional cleaning every six months for most patients. Many patients need to be seen more frequently for hygiene visits (every 3-4 months is common.) Regular visits allow us to catch any issues early — before they become painful, complex or costly to treat.

Dental Health

Why are my teeth sensitive?

Tooth sensitivity is often caused by gum recession — when the gum line pulls back slightly, the underlying dentin is exposed, allowing hot, cold or sweet foods and drinks easier access to the nerve. Sensitivity can also be caused by worn enamel, tooth grinding, or a cracked tooth. There are a number of toothpastes, gels and dental treatments that can help — book an appointment and we'll identify the cause and recommend the right solution for you.

What is gingivitis and how do I know if I have it?

Gingivitis is an early form of gum disease caused by bacteria building up around the teeth and gums. Signs include red, swollen or bleeding gums — especially when you brush or floss. The good news is that gingivitis is reversible with proper brushing, flossing and professional cleaning. Left untreated it can develop into periodontal disease, which is more serious.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is a more advanced form of gum disease that affects the bone and tissue supporting your teeth. It often develops quietly with few early symptoms — which is why regular checkups are so important. Warning signs include persistent bad breath, gum recession, bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity and in severe cases tooth loss. Treatment typically involves a series of deep cleanings, scaling and root planing. Surgery is only necessary in severe cases.

How do I prevent gum disease and cavities?

The foundation of good oral health is a consistent routine at home — brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled brush, flossing daily and limiting sugary foods and drinks. Combined with regular professional cleanings and checkups every six months, this will significantly reduce your risk of both gum disease and tooth decay throughout your life.

Treatments

What teeth whitening options do you offer?

Vista Dental offers professional take-home whitening using custom-fitted trays moulded to your exact teeth. Unlike over-the-counter products, professional whitening uses a higher concentration gel for noticeably better and longer-lasting results. Most patients see a significant difference within one to two weeks. We also offer a whitening for life promotion — ask us about it when you book. Note that whitening only works on natural tooth enamel and won't change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings.

What is dental bonding?

Bonding is a cost-effective cosmetic procedure where a tooth-coloured resin is applied directly to the tooth to repair chips, close small gaps or improve the appearance of discoloured teeth. It can usually be completed in a single visit and produces immediate results. Like natural teeth, bonded areas can stain over time with coffee, tea and wine.

What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain bonded directly to the front surface of your teeth to change their size, shape or colour. They're used to repair chipped or fractured teeth, correct discolouration and create a straighter, more uniform smile. The process typically takes two appointments. Veneers are a long-lasting cosmetic solution that look and feel completely natural.

When would I need a dental crown?

A crown is recommended when a tooth is too damaged or decayed to be restored with a filling — for example after root canal treatment, when a tooth is severely cracked, or when significant structure has been lost. A crown fits over the entire visible portion of the tooth, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. With proper care and routine dental visits, crowns typically last 10–15 years.

What do I do in a dental emergency?

Call us as soon as possible at (403) 548-7077 — we do our best to see emergency patients the same day. For life-threatening situations such as difficulty breathing or severe swelling affecting your airway, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately. Visit our dental emergencies page for guidance on what to do for specific situations while you wait to be seen.
