How nitrous oxide works
Nitrous oxide is administered through a small mask placed over your nose. Within minutes you'll feel calm, relaxed and at ease — while remaining fully conscious and able to communicate with your dentist throughout the procedure. Here's what to expect:
Before your appointment
Let us know when you book that you'd like nitrous oxide sedation. We may schedule a brief preliminary consultation to confirm you're a suitable candidate — nitrous oxide is safe for most patients but there are some exceptions.
During your procedure
A small mask is placed over your nose and you breathe normally. Within a few minutes you'll feel a pleasant, relaxed sensation — anxiety fades, your body feels at ease and your dentist can complete your treatment comfortably. You remain awake and responsive throughout.
After your appointment
When your procedure is complete, pure oxygen is administered for a few minutes to clear the nitrous oxide from your system. The effects wear off quickly — most patients are able to drive themselves home and return to normal activities right away.
