Dentists who genuinely love working with kids
Dr. Atwood and Dr. Spitz both have young families of their own — and that shapes the way they care for their youngest patients. They understand that a child's first dental experiences set the tone for a lifetime of dental health, which is why they take extra care to make every visit calm, positive and even enjoyable.
Our Medicine Hat dental clinic is designed to be welcoming for children — with a friendly team who know how to put nervous kids (and their parents) at ease. We go at your child's pace, explain everything in simple terms and never rush. The goal is for your child to leave feeling confident and comfortable, not anxious about their next visit.
Why early dental visits matter
Baby teeth are more important than many parents realize. They hold space for adult teeth, support speech development and help children chew properly.
A cavity that grows in a baby tooth can affect the developing crown of the adult tooth coming in!
Starting dental care early helps prevent decay, catches development issues before they become complex and builds positive habits that last a lifetime.
When should my child first see a dentist?
We recommend bringing your child in when their first tooth appears — or by their first birthday at the latest.
This first visit is relaxed and low-key, designed to help your child get comfortable with the sights, sounds and friendly faces of the dental clinic.
No stress, no pressure — just a positive introduction to lifelong dental care.

Keeping your child's smile healthy at home
Start brushing early
Begin brushing as soon as that first tooth appears using a soft-bristled brush and a rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Parents should brush for their children until at least age 8 — young children don't yet have the dexterity to brush effectively on their own.
Limit the sugar
A low-sugar diet and plenty of water are your child's best friends. Water washes tooth surfaces and stimulates saliva production — which naturally cleans teeth and neutralizes acid between meals and overnight.
Keep up with the check-ups
We recommend dental checkups and cleanings every six months for children. Regular visits allow us to catch any issues early — before they become painful, complex or costly to treat.
